Detectives arrest varsity student duping Kenyans he can alter KCSE results

Detectives said Ronald Osebe Osebe, alias Nancy Baya, will be charged under the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act, 2018.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a university student suspected of defrauding Kenyans with the promise of altering the results of the yet-to-be-released 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

He is the latest person to be arrested over attempts to discredit national exams in the country.

Ronald Osebe Osebe, a student at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), was arrested on Saturday morning by detectives attached to the Kenya National Exams Council (KNEC) in collaboration with those from Changamwe in Mombasa.

The suspect is accused of obtaining money from unsuspecting Kenyans claiming that he was in a position to upgrade or change the marks of the concluded national exams and those of anyone who failed in the previous years.

He further claimed he was capable of editing the results of past KNEC certificates, "skills" that he marketed in a WhatsApp group he had created with over 300 followers, some of whom had since fallen prey to his deceit.

In the group, the suspect adopts and uses a female identity – Nancy Baya – to lure unsuspecting parents and victims.

"KCSE marking is ongoing. In case you need to improve your scores through editing, hit my inbox so that I can add you to the list before it's full," reads a message he shared in the group.

He was arrested in Changamwe and detained at the Changamwe Police Station where he is waiting to be escorted to Nairobi for processing and arraignment.

Detectives said he will be charged under the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act, 2018. He also faces the charge of obtaining money by false pretences.

The exact amount that he had amassed will be established once detectives get hold of his M-Pesa and bank account transactions, both of which they have sought orders to be supplied with.
