Marrakech-bound Kenya MX team flagged off for 2024 FIM Africa Motocross of African nations

Kenya's national motocross team is gearing up for the 2024 FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations (MXoAN) in Marrakech, Morocco, with high hopes for a strong showing. The championship is set to take place from October 25-27 in Morocco's fourth-largest city.

Backed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Kenya is sending a 17-member team to the prestigious event, which will feature top riders from 18 African nations. Leading the charge for Team Kenya is multiple-time national champion and current MX1 series leader, Apollo Mbuki. The squad also includes three female riders and a competitor in the Veteran Class.

During the flag-off ceremony, the Motorcycle Sports Federation of Kenya (MSFK) urged the riders to maintain a positive mindset and give their best effort in the competition. MSFK President Renzo emphasized the importance of representing Kenya with pride, reminding the athletes that their performances could capture attention across the continent and back home.

“I know you’ll face fierce competition from Africa's best riders, but stay optimistic and race with passion,” Renzo said. He expressed confidence that the team could achieve notable results, bringing pride to the nation.

The Government of Kenya, through the Sports Ministry, is covering all team expenses, including accommodation, airfare, bike transport, visa and entry fees, FIM license fees, and allowances.

Renzo highlighted that the riders selected for the MXoAN have undergone intense training and a rigorous selection process. He encouraged them to make the most of this opportunity to showcase their skills on a continental stage.

The event will feature competitions across various classes: MX50, MX65, MXLites, MX125, MX2, MX1, WMX, and VMX.

Team Kenya's MX50 class riders include Leto Tohani, Chiara Hatanga, Jeremy Hawi, Matt Kagondu, Jematia Kangogo, and Thang’a Kihungi. The MX65 category will feature Kigen Mutuma, Armani Amani, Dylan Hatanga, Jedd Kagondu, Lemayian Mugo, and Jayden Weru. Ngengi Kamau and Chemain Kangogo will represent Kenya in the MXLites class.

In the Veteran Class, Apollo Mbuki and Atete Benzinge will be joined by Fredrick Yongo, bringing experience and determination to the team.

The MXoAN is the most prestigious event on the FIM Africa motocross calendar. Kenya last hosted the competition in August 2016 at the Jamhuri track, where Apollo Mbuki led a 1-2-3 podium finish in the MX2 class alongside teammates Ngugi Waweru and Rohan Gandhi. Elias Sherman also made history by claiming the MX125 African championship.
