World U20 5,000m champion Andrew Alamisi is determined to secure a second victory in Iten at the upcoming Athletics Kenya Cross Country series scheduled for Saturday
World U20 5,000m champion Andrew Alamisi is gearing up for a second victory at the Athletics Kenya Cross Country series in Iten on Saturday 2 November, at the Iten Sports Grounds in Elgeyo Marakwet.
Alamisi recently clinched first place in the second series at Kapsokwony in Bungoma County, finishing with a time of 23 minutes and 57 seconds. Cornelius Kipkosgei followed closely in second place with the same time, while Edwin Elkana secured third in 24:09.
“Winning here in Iten would mean a lot to me because the competition will be tough. It will also help me assess my performance and identify areas for improvement before my major race next month,” Alamisi said after picking up his running number.
Following his recent success, Alamisi has been focusing on speed work and believes this race will be an excellent opportunity to test his competitive spirit against senior athletes ahead of his scheduled race in Rome next month.
In a related event, World Under-18 400m hurdles silver medallist Moitalel Mpoke will compete in the two-kilometre loop after shifting from the 400m to the 800m and 1,500m events. The 23-year-old athlete from Nairagie Enkare in Narok County, who holds a personal best of 48.70 in the 400m hurdles, attributed his change in discipline to a lack of a hurdles coach and a series of injuries.
“I will be racing in the 2km loop to improve my endurance and speed. So far, I’m pleased with how my body is responding to training. I tested myself during the Betika Bingwa Fest in Machakos County against some top athletes, and it went well. I know Saturday will be tough with so much talent in Iten, but my main goal is to finish the race,” Mpoke said.
Athletics Kenya Competitions Director Kennedy Tanui anticipates a large turnout of athletes and assured that the organisers are well-prepared to accommodate everyone.
