Residents demand construction of Mombasa Gate Bridge after Likoni ferry stampede

Local residents who rely on the Likoni ferry services are urging the government to fast-track the construction of the Mombasa Gate Bridge.

Their call for action follows a recent incident at the Likoni Crossing Channel, where a stampede injured four people, including a 17-year-old boy. The chaos occurred after the breakdown of one of the ferries, MV Jambo, which significantly disrupted operations and led to a dangerous rush to board the remaining ferry, MV Likoni.

The Likoni Crossing Channel, a crucial transit link between Mombasa Island and the mainland, has long struggled with ferry breakdowns.

These breakdowns frequently lead to overcrowding and chaotic scenes, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries among commuters.

Residents are expressing growing frustration over the Mombasa Gate Bridge project, which is intended to alleviate traffic and safety concerns at the crossing.

They argued that the bridge's completion is essential for preventing future incidents and ensuring passenger safety.

"We need this bridge to be built as soon as possible. It will help reduce the frequent accidents at the channel and save time for everyone using it," said Athman Hamisi, a resident of Kombani in Kwale County who works in Shimanzi, Mombasa County.

Lucy Njenga raised concerns about the cost of maintaining the ferries.

"Ferries are expensive to maintain. The government should consider a more cost-effective solution. The Nyali Bridge has been in service for over 30 years and remains in excellent condition. The ferries, on the other hand, require constant repairs despite their high cost," she noted.

Mwanasha Khalfan, a fruit vendor at Mackinnon Market, recounted her personal loss due to the frequent stampedes. "I have lost a lot of money because my fruits were ruined during one of the stampedes. The bridge will help prevent such incidents and protect us," she said.

Ali Awadh emphasised the need for immediate action, especially in light of recent infrastructure developments. "Since the government has completed the Dongo Kundu Bypass, they should now focus on the Mombasa Gate Bridge," he said. Furthermore, young children, who frequently become entangled in the chaos during school hours, will greatly benefit from it.

Hesbone Oluoch added that it is the government's responsibility to protect citizens. "Prioritising the Gate Bridge is crucial for ensuring our safety," he said.

Earlier this year, former Roads, Transport, and Public Works Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen endorsed the Mombasa Gate Bridge project, funded by a Japanese corporation.

Originally slated to begin in 2019, construction has faced delays. The 1.3-kilometre bridge, projected to cost around Sh42 billion, is expected to be completed in three years. It will feature four traffic lanes to facilitate smoother traffic flow.
