KQ plane diverted from Heathrow to Stansted Airport after potential security threat

The plane was diverted after the KQ Headquarters received an alert of a potential security threat on board KQ100 on its way to Heathrow International Airport.

A Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Heathrow Airport was diverted Thursday afternoon to Stansted Airport in the United Kingdom.

According to a statement from Kenya Airways, the plane was diverted after the KQ Headquarters received an alert of a potential security threat on board KQ100 on its way to Heathrow International Airport.

"KQ management in conjunction with the security authorities of the Government of Kenya and the United Kingdom carried out a thorough risk assessment of the threat," KQ said in a statement.

"The crew on board were briefed, and all safety and security precautions were taken to ensure the safety and security of our crew and passengers on board."

The aircraft landed safely at Stansted Airport, London for security clearance by the UK Government personnel.

The national carrier further said the threat has since been established to have low credibility.

"No security incident occurred during or after the flight and the incident has since been stood down and the airport is open and is operating as normal," KQ said.

Precaution

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman said: "RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft from RAF Coningsby were launched as a precaution this afternoon to investigate a civilian aircraft which was approaching the UK.

"The civilian aircraft remained in contact with air traffic controllers throughout, and was escorted to Stansted Airport where it landed safely. This incident is now under the control of the civilian authorities," the official was quoted by the BBC.

On Monday, a Kenya Airways plane travelling from Nairobi to London declared a medical emergency after a passenger was taken ill.

The plane later successfully landed in Heathrow after the crew on board KQ100 flight assisted by two medical doctors and a nurse provided medical assistance to the passenger.

Upon landing, paramedics who were already on the ground to receive the aircraft immediately took the passenger to hospital for further medical attention.
