Google Maps now lets you scan screenshots to save places

This update, which is currently rolling out globally on Android devices, leverages advanced image recognition technology to detect addresses, landmarks, and map pins from screenshots saved in a user's phone gallery.

Google Maps has introduced a highly anticipated feature designed to make it easier for users to save and revisit locations they discover online, through social media, or via chat apps, even from a simple screenshot.

This update, which is currently rolling out globally on Android devices, leverages advanced image recognition technology to detect addresses, landmarks, and map pins from screenshots saved in a user's phone gallery.

The new feature automatically detects location-based information in screenshots, especially when a screenshot containing an address, landmark, or map pin is identified, the app prompts users with two options: "Save place" or "Open in Maps."

This functionality eliminates the need for users to manually search for locations again, making it much quicker and more convenient to save places for future reference.

This update is particularly useful for people who frequently come across interesting places or destinations while browsing the web or interacting with others on social media and messaging apps.

Instead of having to re-enter location details or go through the effort of copying and pasting, users can now instantly save locations to their maps with just a tap.

According to Google, the tool is powered by on-device artificial intelligence, meaning that the recognition process happens directly on the user's phone, ensuring a quick and privacy-conscious experience.

The company explains that this feature is part of its broader effort to make Google Maps more intuitive and user-friendly for everyday use, allowing people to more easily keep track of the places that matter to them.

While the feature is initially available on Android devices, Google has confirmed that it will be making its way to iOS later this year, expanding its benefits to a wider range of users.
