The latest SmartThings iOS app update, rolling out globally this week, adds full Siri Shortcut support for automations created within the SmartThings app.
That means a user can now say, “Hey Siri, good night,” and instantly have SmartThings dim the lights, adjust the thermostat, and lock the doors, all without touching the phone.
Previously, this kind of seamless voice control was only available through Samsung’s own Bixby assistant or compatible smart speakers.
Now, Apple users can integrate SmartThings routines into the Shortcuts app, link them to custom Siri phrases, and trigger them hands-free.
The update also improves SmartThings integration on Apple Watch.
Users can browse connected devices, run automations, and view activity directly from their wrist. The iOS version adds Live Activities, allowing quick access to up to five recently used devices right from the iPhone lock screen. It is perfect for toggling lights or checking sensors briefly.
SmartThings supports over 300 brands and thousands of smart devices through Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave protocols, many of which Apple’s own Home app does not yet support.
For years, the smart-home landscape has been defined by fragmentation, with users forced to choose between Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant for voice control.
Samsung’s decision to support Siri Shortcuts represents a major step toward cross-platform compatibility.
“Smart homes shouldn’t be limited by the logo on your phone,” a Samsung spokesperson said in a statement.
“By connecting SmartThings routines to Siri, we’re giving iPhone users more freedom to build the smart home they want, using the devices they already own.”
The SmartThings update with Siri Shortcuts support is live on the App Store (version 2.4.5 or newer). Availability may vary slightly by region, but early reports confirm access in North America, Europe, and parts of Asia.
In markets like Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria, where SmartThings-compatible hardware is expanding, this feature could encourage greater adoption, especially among iPhone users who previously found Samsung’s smart-home system too Android-centric.
