Section of Uhuru Highway to be closed 10 days for maintenance
KeNHA urged motorists to use alternative routes such as Nyerere Road, Arboretum Drive, River Side and Ring Road Kileleshwa.
Part of the Uhuru Highway in Nairobi, between the University of Nairobi Roundabout and the Nakuru-bound carriageway, has been closed temporarily until 11 pm on June 23 to allow maintenance.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) made the announcement via X, formerly Twitter, saying the closure was effective June 14, 11 pm.
KeNHA urged motorists to use alternative routes such as Nyerere Road, Arboretum Drive, River Side and Ring Road Kileleshwa.
It further advised them to "approach the affected section with caution" and "follow the traffic signs and guidance in place" as directed by traffic marshals and the police.
KeNHA's cost of the periodic maintenance of key roads has risen by a substantial Sh2.12 million per kilometre, partly because of more expensive raw materials.
Data by the Kenya Roads Board (KRB) shows that the cost jumped from Sh3.94 million to Sh6.06 million in the current 2023–24 financial year—a change of about 53 per cent.
The increase in costs is expected to hit periodic maintenance, which is described as maintenance carried out at specific intervals to preserve the pavement structure of a road.
Road agencies are also tasked with routine maintenance, which involves regular planned maintenance including filling potholes and spot involvement, which captures the restoration of a failed section of a road.
KeNHA is expected to spend an estimated Sh1 billion on the periodic maintenance of 166 kilometres of paved road surfaces.
