Autopsy confirms fatal head injuries on construction worker found dead at Talanta Stadium

Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid said the family, which is now demanding justice, believes the fatal injuries may be linked to disputes over unpaid wages.

An autopsy has confirmed that 35-year-old Sammy Kyengo, found dead at the Talanta Sports Stadium, had sustained injuries to his head and back before his death.

Speaking on Tuesday, Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid said the family, which is now demanding justice, believes the fatal injuries may be linked to disputes over unpaid wages.

“What we can confirm from the family, the brother, who is here, is that there was a misunderstanding about his pay. And what they are saying is that they actually had a lot of pull and push with the management because he was asking for his money, and he was not being given his money. So there was a lot of misunderstanding,” Hussein said.

Hussein raised concerns over the role of security personnel at the construction site, which is under the Kenya Defence Forces, questioning whether interactions with the security team could have contributed to the injuries on his head and back.

“We also know that that particular facility is under the guard or security of the Kenya Defence Forces. So the question is, could this misunderstanding have led to his brushes with the KDF, and if so, who in particular should we ask the army to respond to these concerns? Who caused the injuries to the head? Who caused the injuries on his back? The family wants to know who is responsible and what happened to Kyengo so that we can get justice,” he said.

Kyengo was reported missing on September 6, and his body was discovered a week later, on September 13, in a water sump behind the stadium terraces under construction. Investigators said the remains had blood oozing from the nose and mouth, injuries on the back of the head and the right side of the neck, and had been concealed with pieces of board.

His wife, Christine, told reporters that her husband had been frustrated over delayed wages.

“He told me the company had refused to pay them since July. He wanted to claim his money and quit the job,” she said.

Fellow workers at the stadium expressed shock over the discovery. Other workers confirmed seeing Kyengo on the day he disappeared, but could not recall whether he left the premises.

“We are shocked and worried. If one of us can disappear and end up dead inside the stadium, in whose hands are we safe?” Ivan Bongo, a colleague, said.

Relatives described Kyengo as a peaceful man with no known disputes. Crime Investigators from Nairobi processed the site before moving the body to the Nairobi Funeral Home.

The Talanta Sports Stadium, still under construction, is scheduled to host the country’s Jamhuri Day celebrations on December 12, 2025.

Head of Creative Economy and Special Projects in the Office of the President Dennis Itumbi confirmed the plans, saying the event will be held under the theme “Tourism, Wildlife, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions).”
