Turkana County witnessed the launch of a USAID livelihood program aimed at benefiting 1200 individuals. The USAID-Nawiri sustainable, resilient, and transformative fish production investment seeks to improve production and management practices within the fishery sector in Turkana.

Valued at Sh 157 million, the project targets multiple Beach Management Units along Lake Turkana, including Lomekwi, Lobolo, Napeget, and Muruong'or. Hussein Abdille, the key figure in the USAID-NAWIRI program, emphasized that the initiative aims to empower the local community along the lake and enhance their livelihoods.

Abdille outlined that beneficiaries would receive fishing equipment and undergo capacity-building initiatives to promote sustainable fish production and management practices. He underscored the potential of increased fish production in addressing the high rate of malnutrition in the region.

The initial beneficiaries of the program, in collaboration with the County Department of Fisheries, were fishermen at Lomekwi in Turkana North. They received high-quality fishing gears and equipment designed to enhance their fishing production.

Adengo David, the County Director for Fisheries, expressed optimism about the positive impact of the program on the community, which primarily consists of pastoralists grappling with the effects of drought. The USAID-Nawiri initiative signifies a significant step towards improving the economic and nutritional well-being of the local population in Turkana County.
