Veteran Nation journalist Margaretta wa Gacheru dies after a long illness

Margaretta wa Gacheru, an art, culture, and lifestyle guru, wrote for the Nation Media Group since the early 1990s.
Veteran Nation columnist Margaretta wa Gacheru has passed away.
In a eulogy seen by The Eastleigh Voice, her family confirmed that she stayed strong until her final moments, displaying a resilience that inspired everyone around her.
"Margaretta fought bravely for life, overcoming countless challenges with grace and determination, until she finally found peace. Her strength will forever be remembered, and her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her,” the eulogy read.
The family added that they would share more details and requested space, privacy, and respect during "this difficult period".
Margaretta wa Gacheru, an art, culture, and lifestyle guru, wrote for the Nation Media Group since the early 1990s.
Before that, she wrote for the Weekly Review/Nairobi Times, Kenya Times, Men Only, and briefly for the Standard.
She had a PhD in Sociology from Loyola University Chicago and was a lecturer in journalism at Kenya Methodist University.
According to Nation Africa’s website, among her last articles was a feature story on a sculptor, Maggie Otieno.
The article, Maggie Otieno: Sculptor par excellence with a knack for metal, was published on May 19, 2023.
“I love integrating the metal and [distressed] wood into my sculptures,” the artist says in the article’s teaser.
The late journalist also managed her WordPress website, known as Margaretta on a Boda Boda, where she reviewed the Kenyan art scene.
