In a groundbreaking development for Kenya's tourism sector, the inaugural group of foreign visitors utilizing the newly introduced Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) under the visa-free entry policy arrived today at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). This marks a significant leap forward in making Kenya more accessible to international tourists, allowing them to explore the country's diverse offerings, from wildlife to the sandy beaches on the Kenyan coast.
The Permanent Secretary of Immigration, Mr Bitok, reported an enthusiastic response to the ETA system, with over 5000 applications received to date. Notably, 2141 of these applications have already been approved, indicating a strong interest among travelers to visit Kenya using the new ETA system.

The ETA initiative aligns with Kenya's ongoing efforts to strengthen its tourism infrastructure, simplifying entry procedures for eligible foreign nationals while maintaining stringent security protocols. By eliminating the need for traditional visas, travelers from select countries can now easily apply for ETA online, ensuring a seamless and efficient entry into Kenya.
Mr Bitok expressed optimism about the prospective impact of the ETA system on the tourism sector, anticipating heightened travel activity and positive effects on the country's hospitality industry. This innovative approach not only aligns with global travel trends but also positions Kenya to attract a broader spectrum of international visitors, contributing to economic prosperity and fostering intercultural exchange.
The successful arrival of the first cohort of foreign travelers using the ETA system marks a promising start for this transformative policy. As Kenya strives to establish itself as a premier travel destination, the implementation of the visa-free entry policy and the ETA system underscores the nation's commitment to extending a warm welcome to guests from across the globe.
The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system was introduced by the government to facilitate seamless entry for foreign visitors. This online visa application process allows eligible travelers to obtain their entry permits electronically before departing for Kenya, streamlining the immigration process upon arrival. The ETA system aims to enhance security measures while promoting tourism and business travel, contributing to the country’s economic growth and fostering positive international relations.
In December of the previous year, President William Ruto announced during the Jamhuri Day Celebration that Kenya would adopt a free-visa regime for all international visitors starting January 1, 2024. This was officially reflected in a special Gazette notice issued by CS Interior and National Administration Kithure Kindiki, replacing the term ‘Visa’ with ‘Electronic Travel Authorization.’
