Former IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati dies

Speaking to The Eastleigh Voice on Friday morning, Chebukati’s son Emmanuel confirmed the news.

The former Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Wafula Chebukati is dead.

Speaking to The Eastleigh Voice on Friday morning, Chebukati’s son Emmanuel confirmed the news.

He said his father passed away on Thursday evening.

“Chairman rested yesterday (Thursday) evening,” he said.

President William Ruto eulogised Chebukati as a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.

"I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest In Peace," he said.

Chebukati will be remembered for declaring President Ruto the winner of the 2022 knife-edge presidential election contest that later resulted in the fallout within the Commission.

Chebukati declared Ruto had won 50.49 per cent of the vote, against Azimio's Raila Odinga's 48.5 per cent.

Chebukati, 64, served as IEBC chair for a full term of six years before his retirement in January 2023.
