All set for the 2024 Wajir Governor's Super Cup

The tournament kicks off with Alsunni FC taking on Iften FC at the iconic Wajir Stadium on Monday

The Wajir Governor's Super Cup 2024 is set to kick off on Monday 5th February in Wajir County, with the unique objective of promoting sportsmanship and addressing pressing issues like drug abuse and radicalization.

The week-long football extravaganza will witness captivating playoff fixtures at various grounds, including the iconic Wajir Stadium.

Adenweli Hashi, Wajir County Chief Officer of Youth Sport, and Talent, emphasised that the theme "Say No to Drug Abuse and Radicalization" underscores their commitment to tackling these issues.

"We aim to build a resilient youth population resistant to radical influences by prioritising awareness and community engagement through football," he told Eastleigh Voice.

Hashi highlighted that addressing radicalization is a paramount goal in their community, and football serves as a powerful vehicle to instil values countering divisive ideologies.

"We prioritise the fight against radicalization. Football is a dynamic avenue for nurturing a sense of belonging and shared identity that stands resilient against divisive ideologies," he added.

The playoff fixtures promise exciting matches, with teams like AlSunni FC, Iftin FC, Heritage FC, and AlAhli FC set to compete. Hashi emphasised that these fixtures serve a larger purpose beyond football. "These fixtures aren't just about football; they are an avenue for community engagement and addressing societal issues. The impact of sports on our youth is immense, and we're using this platform to deliver crucial messages."

Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has directed the County Sports Department to expand youth sports programmes, aiming to deter youth from extremist groups through sponsored sports activities. This initiative comes in response to the challenges faced by Wajir and neighbouring counties in combating radicalization and attacks by the Somalia-based al-Shabaab.
