Brace yourselves for hot days and cold nights, weatherman warns Kenyans

Kenya is set to experience a shift in weather patterns from September 10, 2024, to September 16, 2024, according to the weatherman.

Kenya Meteorological Department Director David Gikungu has advised Kenyans to prepare for exceptionally cold nights with temperatures dropping below 10°C, especially in regions like the Central Highlands, Central and South Rift Valley, and South-Eastern Lowlands.

During the daytime, temperatures are expected to soar above 30°C in areas such as the South Rift Valley, Coast, Western, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya. Counties like Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and others in the highlands are likely to experience these extreme temperatures.

The weather forecast also predicts moderate rains in parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coast.

In the mornings, there will be sunny intervals, with afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms in isolated areas. Nights are expected to be partly cloudy, with occasional light showers in some places.

While most of the country will remain dry, Gikungu emphasised the importance of staying informed and taking necessary precautions due to varying weather conditions across different regions.

"This upcoming week will bring generally sunny and dry conditions to most parts of Kenya. However, some areas can expect light to moderate rainfall, especially in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Coast," he noted.

The weatherman also highlighted the likelihood of low night temperatures below 10°C in specific regions, while daytime temperatures will be notably high, exceeding 30°C in several areas.

The current chilly weather pattern has been attributed to heavy rains in Ethiopia and the influence of climate change. He explained that these factors contribute to the extended cold season and unpredictable weather patterns in Kenya.

"As the sun moves towards the south, it triggers cloud formations over western Kenya, leading to rainfall. These climatic changes are significant factors affecting our weather patterns," Gikungu explained

As Kenya prepares for the upcoming weather fluctuations, the Meteorological Department continues to monitor and provide updates to ensure public safety and preparedness.
