Second Kenyan police officer killed in Haiti as gangs intensify attacks

According to a statement by MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka on Tuesday, the officer was inside an armored vehicle belonging to the Haitian National Police (HNP) when it became trapped in a ditch dug by the gangs.

A second Kenyan police officer deployed under the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti has been killed following an ambush by armed gangs in Petite-Rivière.

According to sources who spoke to The Eastleigh Voice, the officer was reported missing on Tuesday at approximately 4.30 pm during a patrol operation, and images have resurfaced of the dead officer following an asymmetric attack attributed to the Savien gang—the same group responsible for the killing of another Kenyan officer in February.

According to a statement by MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka on Tuesday, the officer was inside an armored vehicle belonging to the Haitian National Police (HNP) when it became trapped in a ditch dug by the gangs.

"Unfortunately, during the recovery operation, one of the MRAPs also got stuck, while the other developed a mechanical issue. As the rescue teams attempted to resolve the situation, suspected gang members lying in wait launched an attack. As a result of the incident, one MSS Kenyan contingent officer remains unaccounted for," he explained.

In response, two MSS mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles were dispatched from Pont-Sondé to retrieve the immobilized HNP vehicle.

Disturbing videos reviewed by this outlet show the slain officer's body being subjected to further abuse by the gang, likely for propaganda purposes—an attempt to demoralise the MSS force and provoke outrage back home.

The MSS command has yet to issue a formal statement confirming the death of the officer.

With Port-au-Prince increasingly falling under gang control, concerns continue to mount over the safety, preparedness, and long-term viability of the Kenyan-led mission.

The incident happened nearly a week after another Kenyan officer was injured while conducting a security operation in Kenscoff within the Belot area.

The mission said the officer was evacuated to Aspen hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition.

Following the attack, the mission received specialised medical equipment from Germany to enhance their effectiveness during operations.
