UN Security Council adopts unanimous resolution urging peaceful settlement of global disputes
All 15 members of the United Nations Security Council voted in favour of the resolution, which was introduced by Pakistan during a session on Tuesday in Hamilton, Canada.
The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution calling on all countries to fully embrace peaceful means when addressing disputes, including negotiations, mediation, arbitration, judicial settlement and other non-violent methods.
All 15 members of the Council voted in favour of the resolution, which was tabled by Pakistan during a session held on Tuesday in Hamilton, Canada.

The resolution reaffirms the principles of the UN Charter and specifically highlights Article 33, which outlines peaceful mechanisms for resolving conflicts.
The resolution “urges all member states to utilise effectively the mechanisms for pacific settlement of disputes as outlined in Article 33 of the United Nations Charter, including negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, resort to regional agencies or arrangements, or other peaceful means of their own choice.”
It further “expresses its determination to recommend the use of these mechanisms, as appropriate,” and “expresses its readiness to utilise the mechanism of investigation provided” in the UN Charter.
Council members also called upon all nations to take necessary measures for the effective implementation of Security Council resolutions for the peaceful settlement of disputes.
The resolution encourages regional and sub-regional organisations to enhance their efforts for the peaceful settlement of disputes, consistent with the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.
It further calls on member states to strengthen cooperation between these regional bodies and the UN itself.
In a key follow-up move, the Council requested UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to submit “concrete recommendations for further strengthening the mechanisms for peaceful settlement of disputes” within one year.
The recommendations are expected to be presented during a dedicated briefing and through regular reporting channels to the Security Council.
