Kenya backs IGAD's initiative to boost pandemic preparedness

The programme aims to enhance the capacity of countries in early detection, rapid response, and effective management of pandemics across the IGAD region.

Kenya has pledged to boost regional readiness against future health emergencies with the launch of the 'IGAD Pandemic Preparedness and Response Initiative' in Uganda.

The programme aims to enhance the capacity of countries in early detection, rapid response, and effective management of pandemics across the IGAD region.

Speaking at the launch held at the Speke Munyonyo Resort Conference Centre, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, reaffirmed Kenya’s full support for the initiative.

“Proactive preparation, early detection, and rapid regional collaboration save lives and protect economies. No country can do it alone. We must work together to safeguard our people,” she emphasised.

The initiative will focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure, improving disease surveillance systems, engaging communities, and ensuring the availability of essential medical supplies and vaccines.

PS Muthoni highlighted that the programme is in line with Kenya’s second 'National Action Plan for Health Security', anchored in the 'Health Sector Strategic Plan', the Constitution, and the Bottom-up Transformation Agenda (BETA).

She stressed that pandemic preparedness is a shared responsibility involving government, communities, the private sector, civil society, and international partners.

“Kenya remains committed to transparency, accountability, and partnerships. Together, through solidarity and proactive action, we can build a healthier, more resilient IGAD region,” she said.

Cross-border cooperation was highlighted as a key priority, especially in Kenya’s northern and western corridors, which feature shared ecosystems, migrant populations, and trade routes.

PS Muthoni said Kenya will work closely with neighbouring IGAD states on joint surveillance, harmonised travel and trade guidance, and coordinated contingency planning.

The PS also acknowledged the role of development partners and supporting organisations, noting that their collaboration is vital to turning the vision of a resilient health system into reality.

The initiative comes as IGAD countries draw lessons from COVID-19 and other recent health crises, with the goal of ensuring the region is better prepared to respond to future outbreaks.
