Bangladesh army takes over government as Premier Sheikh Hasina resigns over protests

The Bangladesh Army has taken over the government, marking the end of the tenure of the world's longest-serving Muslim woman leader.
Bangladesh Army Chief Waker Uz Zaman announced in a televised address on Monday that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had resigned.

He stated that an interim government would assume control, minutes after enraged protesters stormed Hasina's official residence, prompting her to flee Dhaka.
Sheikh Hasina, who has served consecutively since January 2009, has now been ousted.
Reports of the 76-year-old, resigning were confirmed by the army, as well as Bangladesh High Commission officials in Delhi.
Student leaders have initiated a civil disobedience campaign, demanding that the long-serving leader step down.
The leading national newspaper of the country reported that a military helicopter transported her and her sister to India.
As per Reuters, they are currently taking "safe shelter" away from her official residence.
On Sunday, violent clashes between police and tens of thousands of anti-government protesters resulted in at least 90 deaths and hundreds of injuries. The unrest has led to the imposition of a nationwide curfew and a temporary shutdown of internet services for several hours during the "Long March to Dhaka," which began at Shaheed Minar, a significant national monument.
The casualties include at least 13 police officers. The student protests, which started in July, initially called for the abolition of quotas in civil service jobs but have since evolved into a broader anti-government movement.
So far, at least 280 people have died due to the ongoing turmoil. The United Nations has condemned the "shocking violence" and urged Bangladeshi politicians and security forces to exercise restraint.
