KURA launches 15 km road network in Garissa Township
The road network is designed to address key connectivity needs, ensuring that various parts of Garissa Township are seamlessly linked.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) inaugurated an extensive 15 km road network within Garissa Township on Friday.
The launch event, attended by Mohamed Dekow Barrow, the MP for Garissa Township, marks a pivotal step in the region's infrastructure development aimed at transforming urban connectivity in the municipality.

The unveiled projects, slated for construction within the current financial year, hold the promise of enhancing local connectivity. Accordingly, the authority said they will also foster economic growth and improve the overall quality of life for the residents of Garissa.
"We remain committed to road construction in advancing urban infrastructure and supporting the broader socio-economic development agenda,” read a statement from the cooperation.
Mohamed, in attendance at the launch, expressed optimism about the transformative impact of these projects on his constituency.
He emphasized the potential for improved accessibility, which is crucial for economic activities and daily life within the community.
Mohamed highlighted the importance of such initiatives in elevating the region's infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing urban landscape.
“Flagged 11 KURA road projects that are set to revolutionize the road networks in Garissa Township,” he said.
"From new tarmacking to periodic maintenance, these projects are aimed at enhancing connectivity and ensuring smoother roads for all.”
Mohamed said heavy rains had affected many roads and recarpeting is on top of his agenda to improve durability and safety.
KURA is in charge of 12,549 km of road network. A reclassification in January 2016 expanded KURA’s mandate to all counties, with a total of 3.969 km of paved roads and 3,503.35 km of unpaved roads.

This development aligns with KURA's mission to create well-planned, efficient, and accessible urban areas across Kenya.
The state cooperation is responsible for the Management, Development, Rehabilitation and Maintenance of all national urban roads.

Enhanced connectivity attracts business investments, stimulates economic activities, and uplifts the overall standard of living for residents.
Garissa County has a total of 2,700.6 km classified as road network coverage comprising 1,637.84 km under the county government and 1,062.76 km under the national government.
Of the total road network, 420 km is covered by gravelled surface, 2,245.1 km of earth surface and 221 km of bitumen surface.
