Mumias East MP Peter Salasya faces court after highway arrest over alleged incitement

According to Salasya's lawyer, Echesa, the DCI said they are investigating him for publishing false information bordering on ethnic vilification and incitement, but they could not share any details.

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya is expected to be taken to the Milimani Law Courts Monday morning following his arrest on Friday evening.

The MP, who was booked at the Central Police Station in Nairobi, was arrested on the Isiolo-Nanyuki highway.

According to his lawyer, Echesa, the DCI said they are investigating him for publishing false information bordering on ethnic vilification and incitement, but they could not share any details.

“The officers said they were under instructions to hold him until Monday, so we are expecting him to be arraigned,” Echesa said.

He added that the charges might be related to publicly motivated offences.

"This being a politically charged enterprise, we are prepared for any charge that the state will prefer against him,” Echesa said.

The lawyer added that the officers purporting to be from the DCI fired at the tyres of the MP’s car, forcing it to come to a sudden halt, then disarmed his bodyguards, arrested him and then drove off.

The bodyguards were told he was being taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters on Kiambu Road.

Salasya has been going round the country in what he has described as an effort to popularise his bid for the country's top seat in 2027.
