Croatia secured second place with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ghana in a day filled with milestones, records and knockout qualification.

England captain Harry Kane became his country's all-time leading FIFA World Cup scorer as the Three Lions beat Panama 2-0 to finish top of Group L, while Croatia secured second place with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ghana in a day filled with milestones, records and knockout qualification.
Before kick-off in Philadelphia, a moment of silence was observed in honour of the victims of the recent tragic earthquake in Venezuela, setting a sombre tone ahead of the decisive Group L encounter between Croatia and Ghana.
Croatia knew avoiding defeat would be enough to reach the Round of 32, but Zlatko Dalic's men went one better thanks to a late Nikola Vlasic winner that secured all three points and ended Scotland's lingering hopes of progressing.
The Croatians made their dominance count in the first half when Petar Sucic fired a brilliant low strike from outside the penalty area after being picked out by Mateo Kovacic. The effort not only gave Croatia the lead but also became the 28th goal scored from outside the box at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the highest tally at a single edition since the 1994 tournament produced 30 such goals.
Veteran winger Ivan Perisic also reached a remarkable personal milestone, making his 20th FIFA World Cup appearance for Croatia, with every one of those matches coming as a starter. Among outfield players, only Paolo Maldini (23), Diego Maradona (21) and Uwe Seeler (21) have made more World Cup appearances while starting every game.

Ghana struggled to threaten before the break, failing to register a shot on target in the opening half for the third successive group match. However, the introduction of Abdul Fatawu after halftime transformed the Black Stars.
The equaliser eventually arrived in the 73rd minute when Derrick Luckassen headed home Ernest Nuamah's cross after an anxious four-minute VAR review confirmed Kwasi Sibo, who had been standing in an offside position, was not interfering with play.
The goal meant Ghana had now conceded 24 goals in 18 FIFA World Cup matches, but it also briefly reignited hopes of topping the group.
Those hopes were dashed seven minutes from time when Luka Modric delivered an inviting cross for Nikola Vlasic, who powered home a decisive header to send Croatia through as Group L runners-up behind England.
Although beaten, Ghana's earlier results had already guaranteed the Black Stars a place among the tournament's best third-placed teams, ensuring Africa added another representative to the Round of 32.
In Vancouver, England eventually overcame stubborn resistance from Panama to record a 2-0 victory that secured first place in Group L.
Thomas Tuchel's side endured another frustrating display for over an hour before Jude Bellingham finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, cleverly turning home Bukayo Saka's corner.
Five minutes later, Bellingham turned provider, delivering a perfect cross for Harry Kane to head home his 11th FIFA World Cup goal and surpass Gary Lineker's long-standing England record of 10.
The strike also added to Kane's remarkable international tally of 82 goals in 117 appearances.
England also made history before the match, naming Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Jarell Quansah in the starting lineup to become the first England team ever to field four players representing non-English clubs in a FIFA World Cup match.
There was another notable landmark late in the contest as Jordan Henderson came off the bench to become the first English player to feature at four FIFA World Cups.
Despite the victory, England's defensive concerns continued after emergency right-back Jarell Quansah was forced off injured, adding to Thomas Tuchel's selection headaches following Reece James' earlier hamstring injury.
Panama, meanwhile, ended a disappointing campaign without scoring a single goal, making them the only one of the 48 nations at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup to fail to find the net.
England now advance as Group L winners and are expected to face either Senegal or DR Congo in the Round of 32, while Croatia's victory ensured they progressed as runners-up. Ghana continue their World Cup journey among the best third-placed finishers, keeping Africa's strong representation alive in the knockout stages.
