By |

Construction for the 60,000 seater facility will be undertaken by China Road and Bridge Company and the Kenya Defence Forces. It is expected to be ready by December 2025

President William Ruto earlier today launched the construction of Talanta Sports City Stadium at Jamhuri Grounds, Nairobi marking a monumental step towards ensuring Kenya is ready to co-host Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.

Joined by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and Principal Secretary Peter Tum, President Ruto led the charge at the groundbreaking ceremony.

With the stadium poised to accommodate 60,000 spectators, President Ruto outlined his vision for the project; "This facility will be accompanied by renovations in Kasarani, Nyayo, Bukhungu to host all our competitions,"

"Many teams have met with me many times, we have gone back and forth because we wanted to ensure that the stadium is world-class and will be built in record time and cost-effective because we must account for every shilling that we spend. The stadium is not only going to serve our premier competitions but also the grounds will have opportunities for people from within to also use it." He added.

In addition to unveiling plans for the Talanta Sports City Stadium, President Ruto announced collaborative efforts with Nairobi County to refurbish iconic sporting venues such as City Stadium and Woodley Ground in Kibra.

"We are committed to ensuring young sports enthusiasts have access to top-notch facilities," he affirmed.

In his closing remarks, President Ruto reiterated his government's resolve to position Kenya as a global sporting hub.

"AFCON 2027 is just the beginning of our nation's journey towards sporting prominence," he declared.
