Former Mandera South MP charged with awarding his hotel Sh51M tender

Former Mandera South MP Adan Haji Ali Sheikh was on Tuesday charged before a Mombasa court for illegally awarding his firm a tender worth Sh51, 456,006.

Sheikh allegedly awarded his Kwale-based hotel, Lofta Resort, a catering service tender while serving as Kwale County Government Executive Committee Member, Tourism Promotion, Information and Communication Technology.

The accused person, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku, was charged with conflict of interest contrary to section 42(3) as read with section 48 of the Anti Corruption and Economic Crimes Act 2003.

The particulars of the charge are that between May 10, 2013, and May 10, 2017, within Kwale County in the Republic of Kenya, being an employee of the Kwale County Government.

The accused allegedly influenced the award of contracts for the provision of accommodation and conference services to Lotfa Resort Limited, where he is a director.

The former Mandera South MP, who had been summoned by the court, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The accused was granted a bond of Sh2 million with one surety with an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000.

The case will be mentioned on February 27, 2024 for pre-trial.
