President Tshisekedi names Judith Suminwa DRC's first female premier

President Felix Tshisekedi announced Judith Suminwa's appointment on Monday, ending weeks of uncertainty.

DR Congo's President Felix Tshisekedi has appointed Planning minister Judith Suminwa as the country's first female prime minister.

He announced the appointment on Monday, ending weeks of uncertainty.

Tshisekedi's inauguration for a second term in January initiated a lengthy search for a majority coalition in the National Assembly—a crucial step before a prime minister could be named and a government formed.

"I am aware of the great responsibility ... We will work for peace and the development of the country," Suminwa said on national television.

The Kinshasa authorities face a range of challenges, including a worsening conflict and humanitarian crisis in eastern regions, as well as the management of Congo's considerable mineral wealth.
