Zanzibar President Mwinyi secures landslide re-election with 74.8 per cent of vote

Mwinyi, first elected in 2020, will now serve another five-year term at the helm of the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government.

Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi has secured a second term in office, the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced on Thursday night.

ZEC Chairperson George Joseph Kazi said Mwinyi, the candidate of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, won 74.8 per cent of the vote in Wednesday’s elections, defeating 10 contenders from opposition parties.

He added that voter turnout stood at over 88 per cent across the semi-autonomous islands.

Mwinyi, first elected in 2020, will now serve another five-year term at the helm of the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government.
