Cyril Ramaphosa affirms, South Africa stands with Palestine, backs two-state solution
Ramaphosa said that as people who have struggled against an oppressive system of apartheid, they understand the plight of the Palestinians and hence their pledge of solidarity.
South Africa has pledged solidarity with the people of Palestine as the war between Israel and Hamas rages on.
President Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday said he was deeply concerned with what he termed as atrocities that were unfolding in the Middle East.

"We have passed our condolences with the people of Israel and Palestinians. We have a full understanding of how the people of Palestine have taken up this issue...because as many countries have opined, they have been under occupation for almost 75 years," Ramaphosa said.
"People under occupation who have been waging a struggle against an oppressive government that has occupied their land.. but also a government that has in recent times been dubbed an apartheid state."
Ramaphosa said that as people who have struggled against an oppressive system of apartheid, they understand the plight of the Palestinians and hence their pledge of solidarity.
"As the African National Congress, we have always insisted that the only solution for the problems in the Middle East, particularly between Isreal and Palestine is the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders as approved by the world community and the United Nations," he said.

Violation of rights
The President said the violations of the rights of the Palestinians that have manifested through the occupation of their land through bringing in settlers into their land were of concern and may have possibly sparked off the war.
