Kenyan-Italian athlete Ashley Tshanda Ongong’a is the first African female cross-country skier to secure a spot at the Winter Youth Olympics, scheduled to take place in Gangwon, South Korea, from January 19 to February 1, 2024.

At the age of 16, Ashley earned her qualification based on her impressive International Ski Federation (FIS) ranking in the women's Youth Olympic Games quota allocation lists as of December 18, 2023.

Born in Italy and holding dual Kenyan and Italian citizenship, Ashley made the deliberate choice to represent Kenya on the international stage.

Secretary General Francis Mutuku stressed NOC-K's unwavering commitment to supporting athletes abroad.

“We find great inspiration in witnessing athletes residing abroad who are eager to proudly hoist the Kenyan flag. Their enthusiasm underscores our collective passion for representation, highlighting the significance our national colors hold for them,” Mutuku is quoted on Capital Sports.
