Kilifi fishermen get new rescue boat to boost maritime safety

The initiative comes in response to longstanding concerns by coastal communities over delayed rescues and inadequate safety measures during accidents at sea.

Fishermen in Kilifi have received a major boost after the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) unveiled a state-of-the-art sea rescue boat in the county, a move expected to strengthen surveillance and ensure timely responses to maritime emergencies.

The initiative comes in response to longstanding concerns by coastal communities over delayed rescues and inadequate safety measures during accidents at sea.

For decades, fishermen have complained of being left vulnerable whenever boats capsize or emergencies occur far from shore.

The new vessel, procured through KMA, will be managed in partnership with the Fisheries Department, which already operates three patrol boats. Together with the additional capacity, Kilifi now has seven operational rescue boats covering the stretch from Mtwapa to Ngomeni in Magarini.

“This rescue boat is not only about improving equipment, it is about safeguarding lives and livelihoods. It will play a crucial role in maritime disaster response, ensuring that fishermen and other sea users receive timely assistance whenever emergencies occur,” said Blue Economy CS Hassan Joho.

The launch comes against the backdrop of rising maritime tragedies in the county. According to the Kenya Red Cross, Kilifi has recorded 21 drowning incidents this year alone, resulting in 16 deaths, with several fishermen still missing. In July, five fishermen drowned in Watamu after their boat capsized, prompting renewed calls for stronger safety measures.

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro said the initiative will go a long way in protecting residents who rely on the ocean for survival.

“These boats will greatly assist in handling disasters and maritime emergencies along our coastline. Currently, Kilifi has a total of seven rescue boats operating from the shores of Mtwapa to Ngomeni in Magarini,” he said.

Earlier this month, the Kilifi County Government, in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross and other organisations, conducted beach safety and prevention drills at Bofa’s Vidazini Beach.

The awareness campaign targeted holidaymakers expected to flock to the coast during the August school holidays, as well as fishermen who risk their lives daily at sea.

Irene Opicho, Kilifi’s Chief Officer for Disaster Management and Prevention, recently revealed that the county has already recruited and trained 140 lifeguards across all Beach Management Units (BMUs) from Mtwapa to Ngomeni.

Plans are also underway to construct watchtowers along the 260-kilometre shoreline to improve surveillance. However, she admitted resources remain inadequate, with only three patrol boats previously available.

Kenya Red Cross Kilifi Branch Coordinator, Kawthar Alwy, noted that the launch of the new rescue boat will strengthen ongoing efforts to reduce fatalities.

“Out of the 21 incidents reported this year, 16 lives have been lost and 34 casualties recorded. We still have fishermen missing from as far back as May and June. Faster response at sea is what we urgently need,” she said.

Residents say the new vessel represents hope. “Every time our men go fishing, we are never sure they will return. At least with this rescue boat, we feel there is a chance they can be saved in time,” said Rahma Hassan, a resident of Watamu.

Governor Mung’aro thanked KMA and development partners for their continued investment in ocean safety.

“We are grateful for the commitment to protect Kilifi residents who depend on the sea for their daily bread. This is not just about technology, it is about protecting lives and livelihoods,” he said.
