Airtel Africa partners with SpaceX to bring Starlink internet to Kenya and beyond

Starlink has already secured licences to operate in nine Airtel Africa markets, including Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Malawi, and Rwanda. Licensing processes are currently underway in additional countries, such as Tanzania, Uganda, and Gabon.

Airtel Africa has partnered with SpaceX to deliver Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet to Kenya and other parts of Africa, promising to transform connectivity, particularly in remote and underserved regions.

In this groundbreaking collaboration, Airtel will harness SpaceX’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite technology to provide fast internet access to communities, schools, hospitals, and businesses where traditional broadband is unavailable.

The partnership comes at a crucial time, as reliable internet connectivity is increasingly essential for economic development, especially in rural areas.

Starlink has already secured licences to operate in nine Airtel Africa markets, including Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Malawi, and Rwanda. Licensing processes are currently underway in additional countries, such as Tanzania, Uganda, and Gabon.

Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar said the partnership marks a key milestone in the company’s mission to offer affordable and accessible digital services across the continent.

“By joining forces with SpaceX, we’re not just delivering internet—we’re creating opportunities for millions who have long been left behind by conventional service providers,” Taldar explained.

Airtel will also utilise Starlink’s satellite technology to extend its mobile network coverage, providing stronger and more reliable connectivity in remote parts of Kenya and other hard-to-reach regions across Africa.

With more stable internet access, rural areas that have long struggled with weak signals or no coverage at all will now be better equipped to access services such as e-learning, mobile banking, and e-commerce.

The partnership also gives SpaceX a strong local partner, with Airtel’s broad infrastructure and customer base set to support Starlink’s expansion across the continent.

“We’re excited to work with Airtel to bring Starlink’s transformative internet service to underserved areas of Africa,” said Chad Gibbs, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations.

For many Kenyans living in rural areas, this could mean faster and more affordable internet access—crucial in today’s increasingly digital world. It’s also expected to support services such as telemedicine, which is gaining importance as Kenya pushes towards universal healthcare.

Details on pricing and service packages will be released as the rollout progresses, but the initiative is already being welcomed, particularly by those frustrated by slow or unreliable internet connections.

Airtel has increasingly positioned itself as a provider of affordable and dependable internet, and Starlink’s satellite technology offers a way to reach customers previously left out due to infrastructure limitations.
