World’s largest cruise ship, Legend of the Seas, set for 2026 debut after historic launch

The launch involved a 12-hour operation in which 92 million gallons of water, equivalent to more than 140 Olympic-sized pools, were pumped into the dry dock to lower the vessel into the sea.
The much-anticipated debut of the world’s largest cruise ship, Legend of the Seas, is set for 2026, following its spectacular first launch at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland.
On September 2, 2025, the massive vessel touched water for the first time during a carefully planned procedure, marking the beginning of its journey toward welcoming thousands of passengers on board next year.

The launch involved a 12-hour operation in which 92 million gallons of water, equivalent to more than 140 Olympic-sized pools, were pumped into the dry dock to lower the vessel into the sea.
The test was a crucial step to assess the ship’s stability and balance before final outfitting. Weighing over 250,800 gross tons and featuring 18 decks, 22 elevators, and seven pools, Legend of the Seas resembles a modern floating city brought to life by advanced engineering at Meyer Turku.
Part of Royal Caribbean’s Icon-class series, the ship builds on the design of its sister vessel, Icon of the Seas, but is larger and more advanced.
It will host up to 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members to run its day-to-day operations.
Among the ship’s key attractions is the Category 6 water park, the largest ever built on a cruise vessel, complete with slides, splash areas, and pools.
Passengers will also experience Crown’s Edge, a suspended walkway and ropes course that runs along the outer edge of the ship, offering thrilling views and heart-racing excitement.
Accessibility has been prioritised in the design, with facilities and activities tailored for travellers with mobility challenges, ensuring an inclusive cruising experience.
Running a ship of this scale requires precision similar to operating a small town. From managing meals and waste to delivering hospitality services for thousands, the logistics are extensive. Ports will also need to expand their infrastructure to accommodate the surge of passengers arriving at once.
Environmental sustainability is central to the ship’s design. Its energy-efficient propulsion and modern wastewater treatment meet international maritime pollution standards, aligning with efforts to reduce emissions and protect the oceans. Onboard automation technology oversees navigation, safety, and entertainment systems, ensuring smooth operations and enhanced passenger comfort.
Legend of the Seas will begin its first voyages in the summer of 2026, starting in the western Mediterranean from Barcelona, Spain.
By November, it will relocate to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to sail through the Caribbean, including stops at Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. Voyages will last six to eight nights, combining vibrant destinations with the ship’s unmatched onboard experiences.
Measuring 1,200 feet in length and 164 feet in width, the ship includes five main restaurants and several snack bars throughout its public spaces.
Before its maiden voyage, it will undergo comprehensive sea trials and safety checks to ensure every system operates flawlessly, setting the stage for a new era in luxury cruising.
