Kenya Power awards Sh3.5 billion in tenders to youth, women and PWDs
The AGPO framework identifies youth, women, and PWDs as priority bidders, requiring all public institutions to dedicate 30 per cent of their procurement budgets to these categories.
Kenya Power has expanded opportunities for youth, women, and people living with disabilities (PWDs), distributing Sh3.5 billion in tenders under the Access to Government Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) scheme in the financial year ending June 30, 2025.
This represents a major increase from Sh614 million allocated in the previous year, marking the highest engagement with these groups in nearly a decade.

“Last year, we were intentional in meeting and sensitising the youth, women and PWDs about procurement opportunities that exist for them within the Company. Our efforts have led to these impressive results,” said Dr John Ngeno, General Manager for Supply Chain and Logistics at Kenya Power.
The AGPO framework identifies youth, women, and PWDs as priority bidders, requiring all public institutions to dedicate 30 per cent of their procurement budgets to these categories.
In the 2024/25 period, youth-owned businesses claimed Sh2.2 billion, while women-owned enterprises received Sh1.25 billion and PWD-owned firms Sh66.7 million.
Ngeno added that Kenya Power plans to intensify outreach programs to guide these groups through tendering processes.
“We have noted that PWDs often lag behind the other groups and therefore, we will also use these forums to obtain feedback from this group on the challenges they could be facing so that we tailor solutions for them,” he said.
The company also aims to collaborate with banks and other financial institutions to create pathways for funding, ensuring that all eligible bidders can access the capital needed to participate fully in procurement.
Internally, Kenya Power will encourage all departments to support AGPO initiatives by allocating procurement of commonly used goods to youth, women, and PWDs and ensuring prompt payment to help improve their cash flow.
This initiative underlines the company’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive supply chain practices.
With these efforts, Kenya Power is setting a new standard in empowering underrepresented groups, ensuring broader participation in government procurement while promoting fairness, financial support, and skills development for smaller enterprises.
