Businesses granted 30-day relief on long-stay container charges at Mombasa port

Businesses with containers stuck at the port of Mombasa will no longer have to pay accrued storage and warehouse charges for 30 days, following a waiver announced by the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

In a statement, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KNCCI) urged members to submit their applications by December 6, 2025 to secure the 100 per cent relief.

The waiver covers all accrued port storage charges and customs warehouse rent for long-stay containerised cargo.

Shipping lines have also been instructed to grant a 100 per cent waiver on accumulated container demurrage charges.

“This waiver is granted upon lodgement of a waiver application by the affected customers,” the KNCCI said.

The relief, valid for 30 days, aims to ease the financial burden on businesses whose containers have remained at the port for extended periods.

Statutory taxes

However, the chamber clarified that the waiver does not apply to primary port charges, rail freight charges, shipping line service fees (delivery order and terminal handling charges), or statutory taxes, which remain payable.

The KNCCI urged members with long-stay cargo at the Port of Mombasa to act quickly and submit the necessary waiver applications to benefit from the relief.

“Members with long stay containerised cargo at the Port of Mombasa are strongly advised to take immediate action and lodge the necessary waiver application with the authorities to benefit from this 100 per cent relief before the deadline of 6th December 2025,” the statement reads.
