Airtel Networks Kenya Limited has appointed Djibril Tobe as Managing Director, effective immediately.
Tobe replaces Ashish Malhotra, who exits to take up a new role as Chief Executive Officer of Indus Towers Africa.
Djibril Tobe is a seasoned business leader with more than 20 years of experience spanning telecommunications, fast-moving consumer goods and consulting across multiple African markets, with a strong track record in driving transformation and commercial growth.
Prior to this appointment, he served as Managing Director of Airtel Congo B since May 2023, having previously led Airtel Chad as Managing Director and served as Commercial Director at Airtel Burkina Faso.
He earlier worked as Chief Executive Officer at Expresso Guinea, as well as at Ernst & Young and Coca-Cola.
Ashish Malhotra served as Managing Director for four years, during which Airtel Kenya recorded significant growth in network expansion, digital inclusion, and financial services penetration.
He oversaw the rollout of more than 2,000 network sites, the expansion of Airtel Money market share from two per cent to 11 per cent, the doubling of revenues, and the growth of the subscriber base from 16 million to over 24 million customers.
This, alongside the introduction of 5G, eSIM, fibre connectivity, Spam Alert services and Smart Connect broadband.
“We welcome Djibril Tobe to his role, and we are confident that his expertise will steer Airtel Kenya to the next level as we continue delivering innovative and relevant solutions,” the Board noted in a statement.
“We would like to commend Ashish for his immense contribution to Airtel Kenya's growth journey, and we wish him success in his new role.”
The Board added that the leadership transition marks a new phase of accelerated growth and innovation for Airtel Kenya, building on strong operational momentum, expanding digital services, and deepening customer experience across its network in the country.
Notably, the company is expected to focus on scale, reliability, and financial inclusion initiatives going forward.
