4.2 million prepaid customers have updated their token metres - Kenya Power

By |

The "Update Token Meter Yako" campaign aimed at updating 7.4 million prepaid meters by August 31, has seen significant participation, with more than 56 per cent of customers completing the update process.

Kenya Power has announced that 4.2 million of its prepaid customers have updated their token meters as part of an ongoing nationwide exercise.

The initiative, aimed at updating 7.4 million prepaid meters by August 31, has seen significant participation, with more than 56 per cent of customers completing the update process.

The company's General Manager for Commercial Services and Sales, Eng. Rosemary Oduor commended customers for their cooperation in the "Update Token Meter Yako" campaign.

"We thank all our customers for their support in this ongoing global exercise. So far, we are happy that over 56 per cent of all our prepaid customers have updated their meters so that they can continue to enjoy access to electricity," she stated.

The initiative involves scheduling updates for over 7.2 million prepaid token meters. Customers receive reset and update codes when they purchase tokens, which they must input to maintain uninterrupted service.

Kenya Power noted approximately 200,000 customers have yet to update their meters, and the company is focusing on reaching them in the coming days.

Eng. Oduor emphasised the importance of updating meters promptly after receiving the codes.

"Once a meter is scheduled, a customer receives an SMS notification, and thereafter the update codes are sent to the customer upon purchasing their electricity tokens. Our customers are required to update their meters as soon as they receive their codes to continue enjoying access to electricity. We are therefore kindly urging those who have not updated yet to purchase their tokens, upon which they will receive their codes and be able to update their meters," she explained.

To reassure customers, Eng. Oduor clarified that the update process does not affect electricity prices or the rate at which tokens are consumed. She advised customers to load any unutilised older tokens before updating their meters to avoid invalidation.

Alternatives

Kenya Power has also provided alternative means for customers to access their update codes.

In case of lost SMS notifications, customers can use the *977# USSD code to retrieve their codes. "We have made sure that any prepaid customer is able to get their codes, even in cases where they have lost the SMS.

By using our USSD code *977#, any customer can access their codes once their meter has been scheduled. We are also utilising our social media pages to make this exercise seamless for all our customers," Eng. Oduor added.

The "Update Token Meter Yako" campaign is part of a broader global effort targeting all prepaid meters that use the Standard Transfer Specification (STS).

According to KPLC, this specification is a universal method for transferring tokens to prepaid meters, ensuring the security and accuracy of generated tokens. All Kenya Power prepaid meters use the STS specification, necessitating the updates.

With the deadline rapidly approaching, Kenya Power is urging all remaining customers to act promptly to avoid any disruption in their electricity service.
