Antique street lighting initiative brightens California ward in Eastleigh

California ward in Eastleigh has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to the recent implementation of an antique street lighting initiative. This project has revitalized previously dark roads, significantly enhancing the quality of life for residents, business owners, and road users.

Waudo Street, once notorious for its lack of lighting, now enjoys bright, safe nighttime conditions.

California ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Hashim Kamau noted that the Nairobi City County funded the street lighting project, which has covered major areas within California, making the streets safer and more accessible for everyone.

The MCA further stated that the street lighting poles were locally built by jua kali artisans in Kamukunji.

This strategy used local resources and provided job opportunities for California youth who helped mount the poles.

Hashim emphasised the importance of community involvement, stating, "Street lights poles were fabricated by jua kali artisans from within Kamukunji, empowering ourselves."

Waudo Street, one of the busiest roads in California, has become a vibrant hub, especially in the evenings. After 7 pm, the area attracts many young people who gather with plastic chairs along the road as they enjoy affordable dinner meals from small restaurants.

Before the street lights were installed, the dark streets affected businesses in the area. Fartun Abdirahman, who runs a small fast food joint told The Eastleigh Voice last week that thugs on motorcycles snatched phones from pedestrians.

She explained that the motorcycles' high beams blinded people, making it difficult to see. With the new street lights, Fartun hopes that such incidents will decrease.

"Now we have functioning street lights thanks to the county government. We hope that phone snatching incidents and other muggings will not occur at night," she said.

Hawkers who set up their businesses in the evening also praised the initiative. The increased visibility has made their goods more noticeable to potential customers.

Mama Wambo, a vendor who sells fried potatoes, commonly known as viazi karai, expressed her relief. She had been concerned about her sales but now believes the street lighting will help attract more customers to her stall.

The transformation of Waudo Street in California Estate is part of a broader effort to revitalize the area. Once plagued by impassable potholes and mud, the street has undergone significant improvements.

The road's revamping has also facilitated the establishment of various businesses, including shops, hospitals, salons, and restaurants.
