Four fishermen killed in Turkana by suspected Ethiopian militia

Turkana Governor Jeremiah Ekamais Lomorukai condemned the incident as a recurring heinous attack against the people of Turkana.

Four fishermen have been killed today at the shores of Lake Turkana in Turkana county by suspected Dassanech militia from Ethiopia.

Responding to the incident, Turkana Governor Jeremiah Ekamais Lomorukai condemned the incident as a recurring heinous attack against the people of Turkana.

"This is not the first time our peace and sovereignty have been violated. We painfully recall the February incident where lives were lost in a similar attack. Today's killings are a continuation of this unacceptable aggression," said the governor in a press release.

The governor, who sent his condolences message to the affected families and the Turkana communities mourning over the tragic incident, said he spoke to the county security team, urging them to enhance patrols along the border with Ethiopia.

He added that he also spoke to the county response team to coordinate emergency response for the affected families. Lomorukai further stated that he reached out to the relevant national security organs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to escalate the incident through proper diplomatic and security channels.

"We cannot allow Turkana residents, who depend on the lake for their livelihood, to be turned into targets of cross-border violence," he said.

The governor urged the residents of Turkana County to remain calm as security agencies carried out their intervention.

He assured the affected families that the county government will be committed to pursuing justice and long-term solutions aimed at protecting the livelihoods and integrity of Turkana county residents.

In February this year, at least 20 Kenyan fishermen were killed by suspected Ethiopian militiamen in the Todonyang border area along Lake Turkana.

The heavily armed militia from the Dassanech tribe in Ethiopia raided areas along the Kenya-Ethiopia border near the Omo River, spraying bullets indiscriminately at victims fishing during the attack, heightening tensions along the border between the two countries.
