Catherine Kenga gazetted as Kilifi County Assembly speaker

Kenga’s elevation to Speaker follows the removal of her predecessor, Teddy Mwambire, who was ousted through a vote of no confidence on June 30, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and violations of the Constitution.
Catherine Kenga has been officially gazetted as the Speaker of the Kilifi County Assembly, becoming the first woman to hold the position in the county and the wider Coastal region.
Her gazettement follows her election and swearing-in on Monday, July 21, 2025, during a special sitting of the County Assembly.

Kenga secured a commanding 41 out of 51 votes, defeating four other contenders, Faith Zawadi, Tandani Mtana, Ruben Katana, and Mazera Shedrack, in a vote that drew praise for its transparency and unity.
“Pursuant to Article 178(2) of the Constitution, as read together with section 9A of the County Governments Act, section 21 of the Elections Act and Standing Order No. 4A of the County Assembly of Kilifi Standing Orders, as read together with Standing Order No. 12 of the County Assembly of Kilifi Standing Orders, it is notified for the information of the general public that- Catherine Kengawas duly elected and sworn in as the Speaker of the County Assembly of Kilifi and Chairperson to the Kilifi County Assembly Service Board," read the gazette notice.

Prior to her election, Kenga served as the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads and Transport and was also the acting County Secretary, making her one of the most experienced figures in Kilifi's executive arm.
She joined the administration in 2023, following the 2022 General Election that brought Governor Gideon Mung’aro into office.
In the wake of her transition to the Assembly, Governor Mung’aro reshuffled his cabinet, appointing Philip Charo as the acting CECM for Roads to ensure continued leadership in the key infrastructure docket.
Kenga now also serves as Chairperson of the Kilifi County Assembly Service Board, as stipulated by law.
The gazettement officially seals her new role and paves the way for a new era of leadership in the Kilifi County Assembly.
