12 matches played, 15 goals scored and two red cards issued as CHAN hits crunch time
Despite being considered underdogs in Group A, Kenya currently tops the table with four points from two matches.
A total of 12 matches have been played so far in the CHAN 2024 tournament, which kicked off in Tanzania on 2nd August. This marks the eighth edition of the championship and the first to be co-hosted by three East African nations: Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The group stage has delivered its fair share of drama and excitement, with both players and fans doing everything possible to tilt the contest in their favour. Fifteen goals have been scored so far, with Kenya’s Austine Odhiambo currently leading the goal-scoring chart following his standout performance in yesterday’s thrilling match.

The remaining 14 goals have come from a variety of players, including one own goal. Two straight red cards have been issued in the tournament to date, the latest of which nearly jeopardised Kenya’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage. Marvin Nabwire was sent off just 21 minutes into the clash against Angola, a match that ended in a 1–1 draw.
Earlier, Andriamirado Andrianarimanana of Madagascar was the first to see red in his side’s Group B encounter with Mauritania, a match that ended goalless. Interestingly, both red card incidents occurred in games that ended in draws.

Their next opponents, Uganda, sit second with three points after defeating Angola 2–0 in their only match so far. DR Congo are third, having bounced back from their loss to Kenya with a 2–0 win over Zambia, who remain bottom of the group with no points. Angola are fourth with a single point from their two games.
In Group B, hosts Tanzania lead the standings with six points, followed by Burkina Faso with three. Madagascar and Mauritania are level with one point each, while the Central African Republic is yet to register a point.
In Group C, Algeria and Guinea share the lead with three points apiece, while South Africa, Uganda, and Niger are all still in search of their first point.
Defending Champions lead Group D with 3 points, followed by Congo and Sudan with 1 point each, while Nigeria is last without a point. Below is how teams have fared since the tournament started.
