Kenya’s LOC issues strict ticketing rules following CAF's stadium restriction

CAF cited several security breaches during the tournament, including fans without tickets accessing the grounds and those with government-issued paper tickets overrunning gates and breaching perimeter fences, among other issues.

Kenya's Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Total Energies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 has urged Harambee Stars fans to purchase match tickets from authorised e-vendors only and to arrive at the Moi International Sports Centre five hours before kickoff for ticket verification.

This comes after CAF, on Monday, limited the number of spectators allowed at Kenya's home matches at the stadium to 27,000 and banned paper tickets due to serious security lapses at recent Kenya's CHAN fixtures against Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

CAF cited several security breaches during the tournament, including fans without tickets accessing the grounds and those with government-issued paper tickets overrunning gates and breaching perimeter fences, among other issues.

In a statement on Tuesday, LOC, while commending Kenyans for turning out in large numbers to support Harambee Stars, called for strict adherence to CAF's Monday directive and security protocols governing the tournament.

"You are advised to purchase match tickets only from the authorised online vendor as only e-tickets will be a valid form of entry, and not printed versions," the statement, seen by The Eastleigh Voice, reads.

"You are encouraged to arrive at the stadium on match day at least five (5) hours before kick-off with your ticket ready on your mobile phone for quick verification; Everyone must follow all security guidelines and instructions from event officials at all times."

According to the Committee, if Kenyans fail to strictly observe the security guidelines, the country could risk losing the opportunity to host such large-scale tournaments in the future.

"The future of Kenyan football depends on our collective responsibility and co-operation. Continued security breaches risk attracting severe sanctions from the relevant authorities, sanctions that would ultimately deny Kenyan fans the chance to enjoy such events in the future and erode the gains that we have already achieved in the recent past," it said.

The Committee likewise announced plans to set up designated fan zones where supporters can safely gather to watch the Harambee Stars' final group match against Zambia on August 17, in a safe and controlled environment.

"Details of these exciting Fan Zones will be shared shortly. Let us work together to ensure that Kenya continues to host major tournaments and showcase our passion for the game in the right way," the LOC committee said.
