“After 39 days of solidarity, Nairobi County Doctors’ Strike is suspended. We have secured a way forward for all nine demands,” KMPDU stated.
The deal, which was signed under the leadership of KMPDU Secretary General Davji Atellah and Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja, was described as a major resolution aimed at improving working conditions for doctors in the county.
Achievements
KMPDU celebrated a range of significant achievements, including the reinstatement of all dismissed doctors and the issuance of permanent and pensionable confirmation letters for 369 doctors, which are to be provided by May 1, 2025.
The union also confirmed that arrears for staff at Mama Lucy Kenya Hospital, which had been pending since 2021, would be paid in the May 2025 payslips.
The agreement also secured promotions for doctors, salary harmonisation, and the payment of gratuity for defunct NMS doctors, with the payment due by July 2025.
Regarding Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), KMPDU noted that they had achieved the reinstatement of doctors, salary harmonisation, and the promotion of 26 consultants in March 2025, with additional promotions planned for May 2025.
KMPDU expressed gratitude to Governor Johnson Sakaja and the Nairobi County Management Team for their support in securing these victories.
The union emphasised that while the strike had ended, the fight for better working conditions, fair pay, and respect for the medical profession would continue.
