Negligent landlord blamed for raw sewage flowing through Pipeline estate

This warning follows a similar crackdown just a month ago, when Mosiria reprimanded landlords in Pipeline over illegal garbage dumping that had blocked estate roads and worsened sanitation in the area.

City Hall has revealed appalling living conditions in Pipeline Estate, Embakasi South Sub-County, caused by a negligent landlord.

Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria said the department has received various complaints from tenants about raw sewage spilling across floors.

The unsanitary conditions, he noted, posed serious health risks to residents, including young children.

“Today in Pipeline, Embakasi South, I was shocked to witness the deplorable conditions tenants are being subjected to by a negligent landlord. Blocked toilets have caused raw sewage to spill across floors and into bathrooms, creating an unbearable stench throughout the apartment building,” Mosiria stated.

The Chief Officer reported that the main sewer line in the building had broken, yet the apartment management had taken no steps to fix it.

The building, which accommodates dozens of families, now exposes residents to potential health hazards due to prolonged contact with raw sewage.

“The main sewer line has failed, yet the landlords have taken no action to address the situation. This apartment complex houses numerous families, including young children, who are now exposed to serious health risks due to the unsanitary conditions. Such neglect is both unacceptable and dangerous,” Mosiria added.

Responding to tenant complaints, Mosiria assured immediate action. “We will hold the apartment management accountable and ensure they comply with health and safety standards without delay,” he noted.

This warning follows a similar crackdown just a month ago, when Mosiria reprimanded landlords in Pipeline over illegal garbage dumping that had blocked estate roads and worsened sanitation in the area.

During a cleanup exercise in July, he urged landlords to ensure tenants’ waste is properly collected through registered Private Service Providers (PSPs) or accredited Community-Based Organisations (CBOs).

The Chief Officer warned that further violations would lead to arrests and prosecutions, signalling zero tolerance for landlords who neglect their responsibilities.
