Dagoretti North boda boda riders launch voter registration drive after electing new officials

The operators noted that zoning will promote discipline and order among riders, as each stage will have its own distinct reflector design and registration details.

The association of boda boda riders from Dagoretti North Constituency in Nairobi County have launched a voter registration promotion drive after they held elections of officials.

The riders are also backing a new safety proposal in the industry seeking to have them put on safety gear while in operation.

In the election that was conducted at Lavington Primary School, Newton Kegode was elected as the chairman of the riders, while Oscar Vidambo was chosen as vice chairman.

"Following this election, which has confirmed our unity as boda boda riders from Dagoretti North Sub-County. We're going to begin moving around to persuade youths to register as voters," said Kegode.

According to Kegode, youths from Dagoretti North and the entire county of Nairobi should take advantage of the ongoing voter listing so that they can be part of the change they've been yearning for.

"The main reason we're rooting for voter registration among youths is because of the way we have seen them getting used to causing violence and anarchy during political meetings. This time, we want young people to take part in change," explained Kegode.

Kegode was previously the chairman of Kileleshwa Ward Boda Boda Riders Association before his election to head the Dagoretti North Boda Boda Riders lobby.

The riders welcomed the proposed zoning of reflector jackets, saying the move will enhance security and accountability within the sector.

They said the initiative will help identify operators from different zones, curbing cases of impersonation and reducing violent incidents that have recently tarnished the image of the industry.

The operators noted that zoning will promote discipline and order among riders, as each stage will have its own distinct reflector design and registration details.

They condemned the rising cases of violence where some riders have been involved in acts such as burning vehicles without valid reasons, saying such incidents unfairly paint all bodaboda operators in a negative light.

The group urged fellow riders to embrace professionalism, obey traffic rules, and cooperate with authorities to eliminate rogue elements from the sector.

They also appealed to the Nairobi County Government and the Ministry of Transport to fast-track the implementation of the zoning plan and ensure all riders are properly registered to restore public confidence in the bodaboda business.
