Jamia Mosque marks 100 years with photo exhibition, centenary events celebrating faith and community service

The Jamia Mosque Committee said the exhibition will capture the mosque’s transformation over the decades, highlighting its contributions to religious education, social welfare, civic engagement and Kenya’s cultural and architectural heritage.

Nairobi’s Jamia Mosque is celebratating a century of faith, education and community service with a photo exhibition at the Multi-Purpose Hall from October 27 to 30, 2025, tracing the mosque’s journey from its early days in the 1920s to its current status as a landmark institution.

In a statement on Monday, Jamia Mosque Committee said the exhibition will capture the mosque’s transformation over the decades, highlighting its contributions to religious education, social welfare, civic engagement and Kenya’s cultural and architectural heritage.

“Through curated images, the exhibition aims to celebrate the vision of the founders and the generations who have upheld Jamia’s mission of unity, service and guidance,” the committee said.

The launch will be attended by dignitaries, scholars, community leaders and partners who have been part of Jamia’s century-long journey. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the story of one of Kenya’s most iconic religious institutions through photographs and historical displays.

“This exhibition stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to faith, community and national development,” the committee added.

Aside from the photo exhibition, the celebrations will include the launch of the Jamia Book and the rebranding of Horizon Television.

On Friday, October 31, a public lecture and book sale will be held at the Mosque from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, while Saturday, November 1, will feature the 9th edition of the Jamia Mosque Open Day at the historic mosque on Banda Street.

The Open Day, organised by the Jamia Da’wah Department from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, will welcome people from all walks of life to learn about Islam through guided tours, interactive sessions and exhibitions on Islamic history and culture.

“Refreshments, reading materials, and translated copies of the Noble Qur’an will also be available,” the Mosque said.

The centenary celebrations will conclude on Sunday, November 2, with a free medical camp organised by the Jamia Mosque Committee, aimed at providing essential health services to vulnerable members of the community.
