Halal business workshop seeks to drive growth in East Africa

Discussions centred on potential collaborations in promoting halal science, including building academic networks, transferring scientific knowledge, and supporting regional entrepreneurs to develop halal products in line with international standards.
Jamia Mosque Nairobi on Tuesday hosted a high-profile Halal Business Development and Export Readiness Workshop, bringing together diplomats, scholars, and entrepreneurs in a bid to strengthen the growth of the halal industry across East Africa.
Themed “Halal Science, Innovation and Industry,” the workshop showcased a strong diplomatic presence, including Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle, Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Morakot Janemathukorn, Thailand’s Ambassador to Kenya, Ruzaimi Mohamad, High Commissioner of Malaysia to Kenya, Dr Akram Jamil Suleiman, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Iraq, and Amb Dr Khalid Mohammed Al Kathiri, Permanent Representative and Head of the League of Arab States to the United Nations Offices in Nairobi.

The event, held at the Jamia Mosque Multi-purpose Hall, brought together halal industry experts, entrepreneurs, Islamic scholars, and key stakeholders. It was co-organised by the Royal Embassy of Thailand, the Halal Science Centre at Chulalongkorn University, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Kenya, and Jamia Mosque Nairobi.
The workshop aimed at the dissemination of halal knowledge while examining the role of halal science in driving sustainable business practices and fostering innovation. Discussions centred on potential collaborations in promoting halal science, including building academic networks, transferring scientific knowledge, and supporting regional entrepreneurs to develop halal products in line with international standards.
A delegation from the Halal Science Centre at Chulalongkorn University, led by Prof Dr Winai Dahlan, Founder and Advisor of the Centre, participated alongside Dr. Pornpimon Mahamad, Centre Director, Dr Anat Denyingyot, Deputy Director, Dr Najwa Yanya Santivorakul, and Dr Sarawut Aree, Director of the Muslim Studies Centre.
Dynamic sessions covered topics such as the global halal economy, halal and haram principles, the application of halal science and technology, the HAL-Q system, halal blockchain, halal routes, and the modern Muslim society.
Addressing the gathering, Sheikh Muhammad Osman Warfa, Chairman of Jamia Mosque Committee, expressed gratitude to the diplomats for their role in making the event a reality.
“I want to take this opportunity on behalf of the leadership of Jamia Mosque to welcome and sincerely thank you, Your Excellency Ambassador of Somalia to Kenya, and Your Excellency Ambassador of Thailand to Kenya, for sparing time to visit us and for holding the Halal workshop here at Jamia Mosque. We do not take it for granted,” he said.
Sheikh Warfa stressed that the workshop holds the potential to empower Muslim businesses, strengthen economic ties, and align commercial growth with halal values and principles.
Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Ibrahim Abdulle, emphasised the importance of the event as a platform for promoting halal business practices and advancing sustainable development in East Africa. He noted its alignment with the global halal economy projected to reach USD 5.91 trillion by 2033.
Thailand’s Ambassador to Kenya, Morakot Janemathukorn, said her participation reflected her country’s commitment to fostering halal innovation and strengthening trade and economic partnerships with the region.
In his lecture, Prof Dr Winai Dahlan explained that the workshop was an educational platform designed to transfer scientific advancements and innovations to boost the halal industry.
Jamia Mosque leaders in attendance included Deputy Chairman Abdullatif Essajee, Secretary-General AbdulBari Hamid, Deputy Secretary-General Hussein Abdinassir, Treasurer Billow Kerrow, Deputy Treasurer Khider Farouk Adam, Imam Sheikh Jamaludin Osman, and Majlis members Sheikh Ibrahim Lethome, Dr. Ali Muhammad Salim, and Abdulhamid Slatch, among others.
