Unity in sharing: Majengo residents celebrate Eid amid economic challenges

As the Muslim faithful celebrate Eid, the atmosphere in the Majengo slums paints a distinctive picture.

Despite facing economic struggles, the residents of Majengo find comfort in coming together with their families and neighbours to celebrate Eid, embracing the values of sharing and gratitude amidst financial difficulties.

As I stroll through Majengo, I'm struck by the sight of women carrying bowls of food from door to door, generously exchanging dishes with one another. Those who have spare share with those who don't, reflecting the tight-knit community spirit prevalent in Majengo.

Mariam Mohamed is one of the residents of Bash Majengo who is navigating through the complexities of Eid celebrations amid economic challenges.



Despite her family's financial strain, Mariam remains grateful for the conclusion of Ramadan and the chance to celebrate Eid with her loved ones.

"I'm thankful that Ramadan has ended, but this Eid feels a bit different for us financially. Regardless, we'll appreciate whatever little we can afford," she says.

Expressing her concerns with a heavy heart, Mariam hopes for a little extra money from her husband to enhance their celebration and share with their neighbours.

"For today's celebration, I'm still hoping that my husband will come home with some money. If he does, we'll be able to celebrate and share with our neighbours. If that doesn't happen, we'll be grateful for whatever we can afford."



However, she remains hopeful and appreciative of whatever they have, showcasing the resilience and positivity ingrained in the Majengo community.

Community sharing

Shamilla Kidari a resident of Majengo, warmly opens her doors to visitors and neighbours to celebrate Eid together. Despite limited resources, Shamilla emphasises the importance of community sharing, embodying the spirit of compassion and unity that defines Eid festivities.

"We've prayed and the day looks beautiful. Today, I plan to host visitors and neighbours to celebrate with them. Whatever we have, we'll share with our neighbours. I aim to cater to around 15 people who will come to my home; no one will leave hungry," Shamilla said.



Through her generosity and kindness, Shamilla demonstrates that Eid's true essence lies not in extravagance but in the spirit of togetherness and support for one another.

Abubakar Saidi, a resident of Highrise within Majengo, also shares his thoughts on Eid amidst economic challenges. Unable to afford a goat, Abubakar improvises by celebrating with a chicken instead of a goat, ensuring that his family and neighbours partake in the festivities.

"Today, I can't afford to slaughter a goat, so I'll settle for a chicken to celebrate with my children and six neighbours. We've already shared breakfast, and lunch will be the same. I'll go door to door, ensuring everyone has a share. We're thankful for what we have," Abubakar adds.

Abubakar's story highlights the resilience and adaptability of Majengo's residents, who find innovative ways to celebrate Eid despite financial constraints. His commitment to sharing with the community exemplifies the unwavering spirit of generosity and unity that characterises Eid.
