LPG gas tanker burst into flames at Fedha Estate in Nairobi

By |

Police cordoned off the area and redirected traffic by blocking the lane.

Police rushed to evacuate residents at Fedha Estate in Nairobi’s Pipeline area along the Outer Ring Road on Monday after a truck ferrying a tank of liquefied petroleum gas burst into flames.

Reports state that the tanker overturned before catching fire. Eyewitnesses further claimed that the accident occurred around midday.

Photos and video clips accessed by the Eastleigh Voice showed billows of smoke engulfing the accident scene near a footbridge at a matatu terminus.

Another photo indicated a charred 14-seater matatu. No deaths have been recorded in the 12 pm incident.

However, one person incurred crucial injuries. The identity of the victim and the nature of his injuries have yet to be disclosed.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei, while speaking to media outlets, confirmed the incident and the subsequent evacuation, which he stated was the standard protocol for safety measures.

Police also cordoned off the area and redirected traffic by blocking the lane.

They also asked motorists to seek alternative routes as the area was declared a danger zone due to the nature of the commodity being transported, gas.

Emergency providers feared a subsequent explosion. They were also yet to ascertain the amount of gas being transported and the consequences of a second explosion.

Police are yet to ascertain the cause of the accident, which caused fear and panic among local residents and motorists alike.

A preliminary report will be issued soon after police commence investigations into the accident.

In February this year, 12 people died in Embakasi East after an illegal gas plant exploded. Several other people were injured and displaced.

Following the explosion, the Interior Ministry, led by Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki,  directed a fresh risk assessment to be undertaken for all gas plants in the country.

Kindiki targetted closing all non-compliant sites in the nationwide crackdown. Kindiki and Energy CS Davis Chirchir later ordered the demolition of all illegal LPG sites through a Multi-Agency Rapid Results Initiative.

All LPG operators found filling cylinders without the written authority of the brand owners also risked facing punitive measures.
