Rwanda gears up to host historic 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Africa
All schools within Kigali will be closed during the championship week, while public servants have been encouraged to work remotely.
With less than 50 days to go, Rwanda is gearing up to host the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, scheduled for September 21-28, marking the first time the event will be held in Africa.
The championship will bring the world's top cyclists to Kigali, competing in the Under-23 and Elite categories in what organisers have called some of the toughest races in rainbow jersey history.

In cycling, the rainbow jersey is worn by the current UCI World Champion in every category of competitive cycling.
Elite men will cover 267.5km with 5,475 metres of climbing, including the steep Mur de Kigali route. Similarly, elite women will cover 164.6km with 3,350 metres of climbing on a 15.1km circuit.
For the first time, the under-23 women's race will also be held separately from the elite women.
To ensure the safety of athletes, officials and the public, Rwandan authorities, in a statement on Wednesday, announced that the state will implement temporary road closures along designated race routes at specific hours during the championship.
Similarly, all schools within Kigali will be closed during the championship week, while public servants have been encouraged to work remotely.
"All schools within Kigali City will be closed from September 21-28, 2025. The Ministry of Education will coordinate closely with school administrators and parents to facilitate a smooth transition during this period," the statement, seen by The Eastleigh Voice, reads.
"Public servants working in Kigali City are advised to work remotely throughout the event period, except for those providing essential services, which will continue without interruption."
According to Rwandan authorities, alternative and detour routes will be clearly marked and communicated in advance, in coordination with traffic authorities, to minimise disruptions caused by road closures.
The Rwandan government added that special fan zones will be set up across Kigali, allowing the public a chance to witness world-class cycling up close.
"All citizens, residents, and visitors are invited to be part of this extraordinary occasion. The UCI 2025 World Championships present a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of a once-in-a-lifetime international competition here in Kigali," said the government.
