Kilifi County to establish special unit to combat drug theft

The decision follows the recent arrest of two county health officials accused of stealing drugs from Bamba Public Hospital in Ganze Constituency.

The Kilifi County Government is set to establish a specialised unit to tackle the escalating theft of medical drugs, a crime that has caused severe shortages in public hospitals.

Governor Gideon Mung’aro announced the decision following the recent arrest of two county health officials accused of stealing drugs from Bamba Public Hospital in Ganze Constituency.

“The theft of medical supplies in our hospitals has reached unacceptable levels. This special unit, comprising community members, will investigate drug theft, trace stolen supplies, and apprehend those responsible,” Governor Mung’aro said.

He highlighted the significant financial losses incurred, revealing that drugs worth Sh3.8 million purchased in September had gone missing. He attributed the problem to organised schemes involving hospital staff and private dealers.

“It is unacceptable that medicines meant for our hospitals are being stolen and sold privately. Those involved will face the full force of the law. The first suspect arrested has already provided vital information, and we will follow up on every lead to ensure all culprits are brought to justice,” he stated.

Governor Mung’aro pledged to personally oversee the distribution of medical supplies to ensure they reach their intended destinations without interference.

“If you are involved in stealing drugs, know that your time is up. We will not allow this misconduct to continue. Deliveries will now be closely monitored to stop the diversion of medical supplies,” he added.

The establishment of the special unit comes amid growing concerns from residents about drug shortages in local hospitals, with many hoping this intervention will restore accountability and improve healthcare delivery in Kilifi County.
