Solar power boost for Taita Taveta as county government secures deal for supply of 600 MW

Under the agreement, Miale Power Company will generate approximately 600 megawatts of solar power through a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, providing energy to hospitals, government offices, and street lighting at subsidised rates.
Residents of Taita Taveta County will soon enjoy a more reliable and affordable power supply following a partnership between the county government and Miale Power Company.
Under the agreement, the company will generate approximately 600 megawatts of solar power through a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, providing energy to hospitals, government offices, and street lighting at subsidised rates.
For years, locals have grappled with erratic electricity supply, high power costs, and limited access to reliable energy, issues that have stifled economic growth and affected essential services.
Small businesses, particularly those reliant on refrigeration and manufacturing, have borne the brunt of power interruptions, forcing some to shut down.
Healthcare facilities have also struggled, with frequent blackouts compromising patient care and the storage of critical medical supplies.
"We have suffered for too long due to unreliable power. Our businesses cannot grow because we keep incurring losses when power goes off unexpectedly," said Agnes Wakesho, a trader.
Wakesho stated, "If this project truly delivers what they promise, it will change our lives for the better."
The agreement, signed in Mwatate at the office of Deputy Governor Christine Kilalo, outlines a roadmap for the financing, maintenance, and operation of solar power plants across the county. The energy will be supplied at a lower cost, ensuring sustainability and affordability for essential sectors.
Miale Power Company CEO Jackton Konyango highlighted the county’s untapped potential, citing its geographical positioning and abundant sunlight as key factors that made it ideal for investment.

"Taita Taveta presents an incredible opportunity for renewable energy development. We are confident that this project will not only improve power access but also create job opportunities for the local community," he said.
Deputy Governor Kilalo welcomed the initiative, terming it a timely intervention that would transform service delivery across the county. "We have struggled with power challenges for years, and this partnership will ensure that our hospitals, government offices, and street lighting are powered efficiently and cost-effectively," she stated.
County Energy Executive Committee Member Arch. Martin Tairo Maseghe underscored the role of the County Energy Plan in facilitating such investments, affirming that the current administration remains committed to enhancing the county’s energy infrastructure.
"This is a significant step in securing energy independence for Taita Taveta. With reliable electricity, we expect improved security due to better street lighting, better healthcare services, and a thriving business environment," Maseghe remarked.
Among the key beneficiaries of the initiative will be the proposed special economic zone in Manga, which is expected to attract industries and spur economic growth.
The project, once operational, is set to alleviate the county’s reliance on the national grid and reduce the financial burden on residents.
Many locals remain hopeful that this deal will finally end the longstanding energy woes that have hindered development. "We are watching closely. We just want to see action and not just words," said Samuel Mwaringa, a boda boda operator in Taveta.
With implementation set to begin soon, Taita Taveta residents are optimistic that the promise of clean, affordable, and sustainable energy will soon become a reality.
